Penguins CC

The first team in our series of introductions of participating teams that will compete for the Cricket On Ice Trophy in 2022 are #COI trophy debutants, Penguins CC.

Penguins CC were founded in 2006 at Hatfield College, Durham University. We formed our own independent ‘Gents XI’, playing a handful of fixtures against University colleges and wandering sides. The core squad moved to London and kept our eye in by entering a team to the London ‘Last Man Stands’ T20 leagues. To keep the team morale up over the winter months we also founded a football team – FC Pinguino – and entered the ‘League of Gentlemen’, a friendly but competitive league in Wandsworth, mainly consisting of old school / university friends.

Now all in our early 30s, the classic cricket road-bumps of weddings / babies / stag dos(!) have slowed us down a little but we always manage to play our annual house match, mixed in with friendlies against village sides where possible.

The name ‘Penguins CC’ was inspired by the book ‘When Penguins Stopped Play’, by Harry Thompson (a ‘must read’ if you haven’t already). The book maps the story of a wandering cricket side that we hope to emulate, touring the world and playing in the most unlikely venues, including Antarctica. Needless to say that when we heard of ‘Cricket on Ice’ we had to submit an application immediately!
