Tournament report

After a one year absence due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the 2022 Cricket on Ice Trophy was bigger & better than ever with six teams competing from Thursday 17th - Saturday 19th February 2022.

Day One (Thursday 17th February)

The tournament began in surprisingly warm conditions of plus 3 degrees and and even more surprising nine wicket victory for the Touring Cavaliers over hardened Cricket on Ice regulars, Old Cholmeleians. Touring Cavaliers captain Bill Johnson (4.0-0-11-3) led the way with three wickets in the first innings, but left it to Paul Marshall (23*) & Jason Caunt (20) to knock off the runs with the loss of just one wicket.

In the second game, AID UK CC had an equally easy time against the hosts St Moritz, with an eight wicket victory on the rather trickier pitch 2.
Six ducks by St Moritz CC in the first innings followed by a further two in the second told the story. AID UK CC bowlers Vipul V (2.4-0-9-3 ) & Naveen N (2.0-1-4-3) had a rather easier time of it than the batsman, sharing the best of the bowling figures in the second match.

And in the final game of day one Penguns XI scored 130 against the students of the Lyceum Alpinum, Jonathan Wilkes-Green (34) leading the way with the day's top individual score.
In reply the Lyceum Alpinum started well but waned towards the end, scoring 74 to hand the Penguins a 58 run victory, Matt Simmond's also taking three wickets (3.0-0-8-3).

The second day of the tournament proved to more challenging from a weather perspective with a freezing Maloja wind blowing through the valley for most of the day.
The first game resulted in another win for Pengiuns XI and a second defeat for the hosts. However, this match proved to be a much closer contested affair than the first day and one of the best matches of this year's tournament.
Penguins set St Moritz a total of 135 for the loss of 5 wickets. Penguin openers Luke Thorne (22) and James Gordon (29) setting up the innings, despite the best efforts of St Moritz's leading bowler Chris Southwell (4.0-1-20-2).
In reply, St Moritz openers Prafull Shikare (26) & Kersley Corder (22) started equally well, but despite the best unbeaten efforts of Gnanasekaran Thoppae (13*) & Chris Southwell (37*) they fell 13 runs short in their allotted 20 overs

The Touring Cavaliers also recorded their second victory of the tournament on pitch two with 56 run victory over Lyceum Alpinum. The Touring cavaliers scored 144-6 dismissing the school for 88 all out in 14.2 overs.
